Choosing Bedding for Better Sleep
What to look for in sheets, pillows, and duvets for a more restful night.
Better sleep starts with what you sleep on, and the right bedding is one of the easiest ways to feel more comfortable at home. Begin with sheets. Natural fibres like cotton and linen breathe well and regulate temperature through the night, which helps you fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer. Look for a tight weave and a weight that suits your climate; crisp percale is cool and fresh, while sateen is softer and warmer.
Your pillow matters as much as your mattress. If you sleep on your side, choose a firmer, higher pillow that fills the gap between your neck and the mattress. Back sleepers need medium support, and front sleepers do best with a thin, soft pillow to avoid strain. Replace pillows every two years; they lose support long before they look worn.
A duvet should match the season. A lighter tog rating for summer and a warmer one for winter keeps you comfortable without night sweats or cold wakes. If you share a bed, consider two single duvets instead of one double; it is a small change that ends the nightly tug of war and lets each of you sleep at your own temperature.
Finally, layer a mattress protector to keep everything fresh and extend the life of your bedding. Comfortable sleep is not a luxury. It is the foundation of how you feel all day, and the right bedding pays for itself every single night.
